Getting Started with AI: No Experience Needed

Let me guess. You have heard people talking about AI, ChatGPT, all of it. Maybe a friend showed you something on their phone, or you saw a headline that made it sound like robots are coming for everyone’s job. And you thought, “That is interesting, but I have no idea where to start.”

Good news: you do not need a computer science degree. You do not need to know how to code. You do not even need to be particularly tech-savvy. If you can type a question into Google, you can use AI.

So what is it, actually?

ChatGPT and Claude are tools you can talk to by typing. You ask them something or give them a task, and they write back a helpful response. (Not sure which one to pick? Here is a comparison of ChatGPT vs. Claude to help you decide.) Think of it like texting a very knowledgeable assistant who never sleeps, never judges your questions, and responds in about three seconds.

They are not search engines. They do not just pull up links. They actually generate a response based on what you asked. You can say, “Write me a thank-you note for a client named Sarah who just referred two new customers,” and it will write you a real, usable thank-you note. Right there. Done.

That is it. That is the core of what these tools do. They read what you type, and they write something useful back.

Three things you can try right now

You do not need to sign up for anything fancy. Go to chat.openai.com or claude.ai, create a free account, and try one of these:

1. Rewrite an email you have been putting off. We all have one sitting in our drafts. Paste it in and say, “Make this more professional and concise.” Or, “Make this friendlier but keep it short.” You will be surprised how fast it cleans things up.

2. Summarize something long. Got a contract, a policy document, or a newsletter you have been meaning to read? Paste the text in and say, “Summarize this in five bullet points.” It will pull out what matters so you can move on with your day.

3. Brainstorm something. Trying to name a new product? Coming up with ideas for a social media campaign? Just tell the AI what you are working on and ask for ten ideas. You will probably toss half of them, but the other half will get your wheels turning.

It is not going to break anything

One of the biggest things that holds people back is the worry that they will mess something up. You will not. The AI does not save your information, it does not post anything publicly, and it does not charge you per question on the free plans. It is just a text box. Type something, see what happens, and try again if the first answer is not what you wanted.

The people who get the most out of AI are not the ones who understand it best. They are the ones who just start using it and figure out what works for their day-to-day. If you want a structured approach, take a look at how it works when you partner with someone who can guide you through the process.
